Rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Speciale Aerodinamica to Feature at Concours of Elegance
The Concours of Elegance is thrilled to feature an exceptionally rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Speciale Aerodinamica, a vehicle that embodies the pinnacle of automotive design and engineering. This remarkable car will be showcased at Hampton Court Palace from August 31 to September 1, offering attendees a unique glimpse into the history of Ferrari’s groundbreaking designs.
During the 1950s and 1960s, the Ferrari 250 GT series became synonymous with performance and luxury, featuring the legendary 3-litre V12 engines. Among these, the 250 GT SWB Speciale Aerodinamica stands out, thanks to its unique aerodynamic design by Pininfarina. Unveiled at the 1960 Turin Salone dell’Automobile, the Superfast II model introduced an entirely new body shape, capturing the essence of a Gran Turismo limousine with its sleek and meticulously detailed design.
Antoine Prunet, a noted Ferrari authority, described the Superfast II as a harmonious design inspired by the profile of an airplane wing. The car’s leading edge is represented by its nose, with a centrally positioned air intake for the radiator. The trailing edge is the streamlined rear deck, which converges with the curves of the roof, creating a visually stunning and aerodynamically efficient form.
Chassis 3615 GT, one of only three ever built, has a storied history. Originally delivered to businessman F. Gatta in 1962, it is finished to Pininfarina and Ferrari’s highest standards, combining the chassis and engine of a 250 SWB with a body inspired by the Superamerica model. This unique blend of elements makes it one of the most significant examples of Ferrari’s design prowess.
Over the years, 3615 GT has passed through the hands of several distinguished collectors. Despite losing its original engine, it has been carefully maintained and restored, ensuring its legacy endures. The car’s distinctive aquamarine-blue switches, pile-textured headlining, and luxurious tan or cream leather upholstery make it a stunning example of automotive craftsmanship.
After being displayed as part of Fabrizio Violati’s Collezione Maranello Rosso, the car is now offered with a long-term Museum exhibit status, requiring careful inspection and proper re-commissioning. This year’s Concours of Elegance provides an exceptional opportunity to appreciate this masterpiece in person, among countless other rare and historically important Ferrari models.
